4-mpd also known as 2-Methyl-2,4-pentanediol is an organic compound. The chemical is in clear liquid form and is created from diacetone alcohol by way of hydrogenation. The formal name is 2-Methyl-2,4-pentanediol with a molecular formula being C6H14O2 and the molecular weight of 118.17 g/mol. 4-mpd exists as two enantiomers being 4R(-) and 4S(+).
The water solubility and the hydrocarbon portion of the molecule allow it to be compatible with oils providing surfactant and emulsion stabilizing properties. The thickness can be used in the flow control properties of some products that include hydraulic fluids, solvents, cleaners, and coatings.
